A Displaced Heart

Displaced Heart is a Photo Essay looking at the life of displaced Palestinians living in Refugee Camps within the West Bank.

Shot over the two weeks in Nov 2012 where intense rocket exchanges between Gaza and Israel dominated the main media headlines, this story intends to show what life is like on the other side of Palestinian territories, far away from the rocket fire and press convoys, where the day to day life of normal Palestinians may not be seen as newsworthy.

Clashes In Aida Refugee Camp

Today saw clashes between Palestinian residents of Aida Refugee Camp, and the Israelis IDF as the conflict with Gaza appeared to spill onto the streets of Bethlehem. It is not clear what instigated the entry of Israelis soldiers into the camp, however once inside; there was a flurry of tear gas, rubber bullets, M16 fire and a water cannon being fired at the Palestinians, who proceeded to returned fire with rocks and catapults.

More shots to follow…..

Balata Refugee Camp - Palestine

While Gaza and Israel are continuing to exchange rocket fire in the west of the country, I have spent the last few days living in the Balata Refugee camp in the north of the country. Inhabited by 30'000 people living within half a square Kilometre it is one of the most densely populated Camps within the country, the people of which are still feeling the affects of previous conflicts similar to which we are currently witnessing.

Jerusalem & West Bank

I am currently initiating a new project in and around the Palestinian West Bank. I flew into Israel yesterday and had a day to kill before I start meeting up with people so decided to take walk round the Old City of Jerusalem. Below are some of my images from the day.

A Jewish Man Preys at the Western Wall in Jerusalem. Being one of the most sacred sites of the Jewish faith, many believe that if they write their preyers down and post them into the wall, they will be answered by God.

A man preys against the Stone of Anointing, this is the stone that Jesus Christ was prepared for burial. Many Christians believe that by touching it they are touching a part of Jesus Christ.

The Garage - Home of the Winter Cyclist

The bleak months of winter are possibly the most important time in a cyclists training regime. With the season often being won or lost between the months of October and March, it has become a pivotal part of both the professional and the Amateurs training Calendar. In the past, the winter off-season was often seen as a time of rest. While this is still the case to an extent, it has also become a time in which that all needed edge can be obtained. For the Pro it’s a few months hard riding in sun soaked Majorca, good food, a personal coach, topped with lots of rest and a Saunier to keep those unwanted injuries away. For the Amateur it’s dark mornings, a mundane 8 hour shift at work, followed by even darker evenings, bad weather, a personal battle with seasonal illness and an on going struggle to find training slots that mimic anything close to what you can achieve pounding those all important road miles. For more and more amateurs, the cold, sterile confines of the spare room or garage have become the new training ground for six months a year. That 8ft by 16ft brick box becomes the miles of road that need to be ridden throughout those cold winter months, and just maybe this is an effective alternative to strapping on those suicidal headlight’s and making that daily gamble against the twilight rush hour traffic. More and more amateur riders are finding solace in their dark rectangular space historically used for storing auto motive’s, and with great results. With the recent introduction of Powermeter’s and Wattbike’s, some top amateurs including a sub 20 minute Time Trialist claim to spend the entire winter on their Turbo Trainers only venturing off when the weather starts to improve around February, and all without damage to precious fitness. With more and more cars on the road and record breakingly cold winters, maybe it is time to trade in those winter lights for a powermeter and a training plan, and hit the garage for those all important winter miles.
